Location: Chartwell.
My family and I love the area around Serangoon Gardens. Our first home was a HDB apartment along Yio Chu Kang, then we shifted to a condo nearby and eventually to a house in Chartwell. This is my parents' dream home. They had worked hard their entire life to provide the best for my two sisters and I, and this is their retirement nest. One second sister is married and doesn't live with us. My youngest sister is studying in the UK and comes back only once a year during CNY. I’m the eldest in the family and also the one responsible for taking care of family matters and the business. So in part, I’m guilty of choosing this place. When we first viewed the place, we immediately fell in love with it. The previous owner had taken good care of the house and we felt renovation wise would not cost too much. The location was splendid. We didn’t check on the background or asked questions - not the kind that mattered, supernaturally speaking. People don’t normally ask questions like “Is the place haunted?”. My parents took the second level because it’s easier for them to go up and down the stairs. I’ve got the top most level which is also the largest with a sloping roof. My room is constantly cold, even though logically speaking, the uppermost level should be the warmest. Another thing I noticed was a very strong scent of koyak. You know, the ointment patch you use for muscle pull or aches? A strong medicated smell. It came and went. I tried to look for the source but couldn’t pin it down to any location. The thing is, the scent moves about but only around the third level. Some other odd occurrences were minor poltergeist activities - Spotify changing channel, pen rolling off bed, lights going on and off on their own. Nothing life threatening. Once, the letter “R” was written on the fogged up mirror. My bathroom door was locked and no one else was in it other than me. That, I totally can’t explain. It was clear, not faded lettering, as if somebody had written it with a finger. But who the hell did that finger belong to? But all things considered, these were minor spooks. I learned to live with them. If I’m in my room it’s mainly for gaming and sleeping. My helpers weren't so lucky. In the period of 10 months, we had a change of maid twice. Both would rather leave and accept penalties. It was only after we got our third maid that we finally had answers. The new maid had the third eye. Probably more. She could communicate with the spirit. First day she came, she actually asked about my grandfather and if he needed anything, because she saw him standing on the third floor in a parapet just staring at her grumpily. She went “ah” when I told her that I am the only one staying up there. One day I saw her talking to herself on the staircase landing between the two floors. Initially I assumed she was on a phone call and was on her ear piece. But just as I was about to walk past her; she held me back and said, “Wait”. I just waited. Again, thinking nothing more. Maybe she wanted to let the floor dry or to clear stuff. Then I saw it for myself, the family photograph toppled forward and off the table. “Do you believe in ghosts, sir?” She asked me. That caught me by surprise. “Yeah I suppose so”. “Because your room got ghost, sir” she said. From her I found out that the ghost was called Ronnie and he had been the first owner of this home. He loved this place and had planted the tree in the front yard. She provided a lot more answers. Later on when I investigated and verified, they all turned out to be true. But more importantly right now I needed to know what to do with this ghost in my room. She said that Ronnie was waiting for his family to come back. And he didn't want us here nor me in his room. Very noisy. I told her to tell him that there’s nothing I can do. This is our house now. His family, I assumed the previous owners were his children, had already sold the place to us. Then, according to my helper, Ronnie started crying. She looked at me. I shrugged at her. “Can he stay here?” “No!” “He got no place to go.” “Not my problem.” “He just wants his family” Sigh. So through the agent who sold us the place, we managed to get in touch with the previous owners and told them what I knew about Ronnie. Apparently some of the things I knew were intimate details that only a family member would know. Like Ronnie’s cause of death, or the pencil lead scar in his granddaughter’s thigh from a pencil accident. Eventually they came over one day with a priest in tow to conduct a ritual and reunite Ronnie and his family. I picked a day my own family weren’t around for this. I had no desire to explain to them any of this or that their dream home was once haunted. I am in no way insinuating that block 640B is haunted and in no way should this article reduce the value of that estate. This article is to educate and share local superstitious beliefs passed down from previous generations. Written by Eugene Tay Block 640B of Tampines North Street 62 GreenVines made headline news this week when netizens shared a photo of the new Build-To-Order (BTO) flat that looks like it’s a set for a horror movie. Initially I thought it was just a design feature thought up by someone who isn’t chinese and approved by someone who isn’t superstitious. I didn’t think much about it, until I received a text message from a contact who knew something about the history of the land the estate was built on. A Bit of Backstory of the Plot of Land that GreenVines Sits On The place was a heavily forested area untouched by urbanisation until recent years when the land was cleared to make way for housing development projects. Back in the days, the area was a popular spot for spiritual practitioners to discard cursed items, trap spirits inside of trees, or release them into the “wild”. There are a few places like that in Singapore but the numbers have been significantly reduced now. Another famous place for discarding spirits was in Bedok South. The place is also taken over by another BTO project (Hori-cough-cough-zon). That’s a story for a different time. Tampines North was the last part of Tampines to be developed, and over the years it has accumulated a lot of spiritual energy enough for some practitioners to believe that the place has opened up a rift for spirits to travel freely between two worlds. From the late 90s to the early 2000, there was a movement amongst young thrill seekers to spend the night in this part of Tampines North to test their courage and mettle against the spirits. Stories of possession and spiritual attacks were plenty, but to be fair, it was hard to verify the authenticity in many of these experiences. In the late 2000, I suspect the Housing Development Board must have stepped in to invite some spiritual masters to intervene, and the place was gentrified, spiritually speaking. Yellow cloths were tied to certain trees and the process of “herding” lost souls begun.
Chinese Culture and Feng Shui View of Red In Chinese culture, while red is often associated with good luck, prosperity, and happiness, when used sparingly (decorations, clothing, and accessories only), it can also be seen as a bold and aggressive colour that can bring bad luck or misfortune when it becomes overwhelming. In Feng Shui, the colour red is generally not recommended for use in homes because it is believed to be a very strong and fiery colour that can create an overwhelming or unbalanced energy in the space. The colour red is associated with the fire element and is believed to be “too hot” for a home environment. According to one Feng Shui master, he said that buildings that are painted in red are likely to create these two scenarios.
If you or someone you know is living in 640B Tampines Street 62, and have a supernatural encounter to share, please reach out to me (+65 94594931). Note: Regardless if you are a believer or a skeptic, most people will agree that the red was just a tad too much. Repainting work started on 1st March 2023, and the place doesn't look like it did in the photos.
In a CNA article, Housing Development Board (HDB) feedback that the GreenVines estate was inspired by tropical fruits, and block 640B reflected the colour of dragon fruit. This is a confession about a dog owner who moved into a haunted apartment. The dog had sensed something was amiss but it was not until the owners placed her bed at the exact spot where someone had died before that something peculiar took place. Confession by Marie Ho In early August, my partner and I moved into our home in an old condo, with our dog, Heidi, just before the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival started. Heidi is a 14-year old senior dog from Switzerland, who doesn’t act or look her age. Since she came to stay with me last year, she stole my heart and made me a dog person no one thought possible. The following Thursday, we woke up to find Heidi immobilised in her bed. She had peed in her bed, unable to stand up or walk. We tried to help her stand up, but she collapsed right away. It was the first time she was like this, and her eyes looked so dazed. I thought we might just lose her. We rushed her down to the vet for an emergency appointment. At the clinic, Heidi underwent almost every test possible. My usually timid dog turned aggressive and bit all the nurses. We had little choice but to sedate Heidi just to get the X-rays done. The X-Rays showed that her stomach and heart were slightly enlarged, and the full blood test showed some elevated liver levels. But the results left us perplexed - there was no stroke, nothing to explain why she suddenly collapsed, or what could cause a paralysis like that. The vet was hesitant to provide any answers then and arranged for us to come back the next day for more checks. Fortunately for us, there was an Animal Communicator at the clinic that night and the vet invited her into the room to "speak" with Heidi and find out what was wrong, because medically there was nothing severely wrong to explain her sudden condition. Because medically there was nothing severely wrong to explain her sudden condition. The Animal Communicator spoke with Heidi and related her findings to us - Heidi seemed so far away. Heidi was scared and asked if it was really time for her to go, for someone had told her so. Heidi said she loved us very much, and waited a long time for me to come into her life. She had been my partner’s dog for 13 years, but got instantly attached to me since we met. I’ve never been much of an animal person and never thought I could love a dog this much but when I heard that, I broke down and cried even harder. At first I thought it was the stress of moving house and adjusting to a new place. But with Heidi like this, I had no logical explanation. At the brink of sounding crazy - I thought it could be something spiritual in the house/room, as the place had been left empty for a while before we bought it. It could explain why my partner had been having these consecutive long dreams of someone chasing him and waking up tired every morning. Heidi also seemed so lost in our new place, not wanting to come into our room. It was very strange because she always wants to be near us, and is used to sleeping in the room with us. The night before, we carried her into the room and placed her on her bed at the corner, only to have her wake up immobilised. I shared the incident with my sister and family friend, and we arranged for a Space Cleanser to come in the next day. Getting through Thursday night We carried her home from the vet in tears. She was so limp and lifeless in our arms. Her breathing was hard and laboured, sometimes gasping. We had the 24/7 Animal Hospital number on speed dial preparing ourselves for the worst. All I could do was put my hands on her and pray. Please, please don’t take her away from me this soon. That night, we slept with Heidi in the living room. There were two disturbances - first, she had a nightmare and was yelping in her sleep. Second, she had diarrhoea all over herself and had no strength to get up. She is a very shy dog and you can tell she was so embarrassed. We hardly slept that night, waking up to pray over her or calm her down, or clean her up. Space Cleansing The Space Cleanser came on Friday morning. We shared briefly that it had been a stressful time moving house, the consecutive dreams, and our dog getting paralysed. He walked around the house. He said we had a mild restless spirit in the house who was stuck, who he didn't know where to go. He went into the room and said there was a bed where our new wardrobe is, and a man had passed away there - it was peaceful but the send-off was likely not done properly. (We changed the orientation to build a new wardrobe in the space). We were stunned. We didn’t tell him, but that was the exact area we had placed Heidi’s old bed in, and she couldn’t get up the next day. I guess it explained why Heidi was so uncomfortable in the room and preferred the living room. He started chanting and cleansing the house with incense and prayers. And Heidi got up and started walking like nothing had ever happened. She followed him everywhere in the house, just like her old self. He started chanting and cleansing the house with incense and prayers and Heidi got up and started walking like nothing had ever happened. He cleansed the house and said the spirit left by the main door. He gave us advice for keeping our home aura happy and harmonious, and an amulet to put under our pillow for restful sleep. That night, my partner slept like a log for the first time since we moved in. Heidi came into the room and slept on her new bed, this time in a different spot next to us. Her next-day recovery was nothing short of a miracle, but we are still following up with regular vet appointments just to be sure. We tried tracking down the previous owner of the home but reached a dead end. I don’t have a logical explanation for what happened, but take it that we did a good deed. After this incident, many good things started happening - things fell into place, life generally felt smoother. Above all, I’m just thankful to come back to a happy home and to have our dog back.
This was submitted to us via a member of the SC Private Group. This was taken in a condominium in the east of Singapore. According to the management, the 4th floor unit has been empty for three months but security guards doing their rounds would occasionally see a lady in white standing at the window. This video is edited to shorten the duration to where the action is and brightened for clarity.
Discussion on the group has suggested that it might be a curtain or a squatter in the unit but personnel working in the condominium has confirmed that there's not body living in the unit and there's no curtain by the window. So what could this be? You can see the zoom in stills below. Confession by Hamdan Angullia This story was told to me by an ex-colleague, J, many years ago so the details might not be so accurate. The story was so bizarre that it remained in my memory for almost thirty years. J, just got married and was in a rush to move into his first flat at Bedok Central Block 200-something. It was one of those low level flats with only four levels, and he had managed to get it at an attractive price. This first incident took place on the night they moved in. The couple was doing what newly-weds do. The bed was shaking because of the love making, but a little later on, J thought the bed was shaking more than it should. So he slowed it down a notch but the bed continued shaking with the previous intensity. J leapt off the bed and looked around the place. His young wife was still on the bed, obviously baffled by her husband’s strange behaviour. It didn’t take long for her to realise quickly that the bed was still shaking vigorously when it shouldn’t. She too leapt off the bed. Without hesitation or discussion, they got dressed in a hurry - the amorous mood totally ruined - and left the flat. J used a payphone to call his father to explain what had just happened. His father told J not to return to the flat and to wait for him at the hawker centre. His father arrived two hours later. In that time, he had gone to seek the services of a bomoh. J related the incident again to the Bomoh when he arrived and, together, the four of them went back to J’s flat. When they were approaching the stairs, J saw his neighbour, an elderly malay man with a sinisterly creased face dressed in black shirt, black pants with a black songkok. He stood on the stairs as if he had been waiting for them. J greeted the man. The neighbour nodded at J but addressed the Bomoh directly. “I know what you are going to do. But you should let me do it. It’ll be so much easier because they all belong to me,” the man said, and went on to explain that he too was a Bomoh and that he pelihara (kept) a lot of jin and other supernatural creatures. He too was a Bomoh and that he pelihara (kept) a lot of jin and other supernatural creatures. “When the previous owner of J’s flat moved out, the flat had been vacant for a long time. I tompang (use) the place and housed some of these things.” The neighbour explained that he intended to take them all back once he knew the new owner was going to move in. He thought he might have some time when renovation work was being done but J and his wife had moved in without doing any renovation. Once they got the keys to the flat, they cleaned it, brought what little furniture and appliances they had into the flat and moved in, all in one day. So J, his wife, his father and the visiting Bomoh remained on the ground floor while the neighbour went up to J’s flat to collect his jins and other supernatural beings. J didn’t know what the neighbour had done and quite honestly I don’t think he really wanted to know either. It was an ‘ignorance is bliss’ that sort of thing. After the cleansing was done and everyone had left, J and his wife lay in bed but couldn’t finish what they started. The mood was gone and they spent the rest of the night still feeling spooked. Everything was well the next day and the days after. Almost a month passed with no disturbances. One night J and his wife were roused from their sleep from sounds coming from the storeroom. They could hear things being dragged about or knocked on. Maybe it’s the mice, J thought to himself. They could hear things being dragged about or knocked on. He got out of bed, opened the door of the storeroom, and switched on the lights. The storeroom was bare, with just some bags, cleaning materials, a few utensils and fishing gear. J didn’t find any mice in there, of course, but said he felt a strong presence there and smelled a strange odour. It was also strangely cold. The strange sounds continued after J left the storeroom. J woke his wife up and together they went next door to look for their neighbour. “I think you might have forgotten to collect one more,” J said. “Hmmm.” The neighbour looked puzzled for a moment and appeared to be deep in thought for a moment, but decided to follow J back to his home. The neighbour looked into the storeroom, closed the door again and spoke to J outside the flat. “There is something in there, but it is not mine. It is a hantu ayer (a water ghost).” “How the hell did it get into my storeroom?” “I spoke to it just now,” the neighbour replied. “It had attached itself to your fishing rod when you had gone fishing and it followed you home.’ J was stunned at the answer. He had indeed gone fishing at Bedok Jetty the night before. “Can you help me to get rid of it?” The neighbour nodded. Even though there were no more incidents in the flat after that, J and his wife sold the flat as soon as they were able to. No one likes living next door to a bomoh and all his jinns. Confessions by Raysan Ace I heard slow tapping on the lower aluminium part of my bedroom window from outside. I expected someone to be knocking on my door next but it was dead silent. I looked at the time and it was 3:10am. I closed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep and just few minutes later I heard sounds coming from my gate and living room front door. It was like shaking the handle of the gates and thumping the door. I got up instantly and just stood in my bedroom. I wanted to switch on the light but I didn't. I wanted to ask 'Who is it?' but I couldn't. The tapping continued at my bedroom window making my heart beat fast. I've sealed my bedroom window with cardboard because lights from the corridor were too bright for me to sleep. I tried to see any movement from the little bit of light coming thru the top edge of my bedroom window but there was nothing. I opened my bedroom door slowly and softly as I could, went to my chair and sat quietly. I strained my ears to pick up any sound but it was quiet except for my bedroom fan. I lit up a cigarette, sitting in darkness thinking if someone was playing a fool on me? I didn't feel any presence in the house but had this irritation of heavy burden on my chest. It was very disturbing. Finished smoking, got up and was about to enter my bedroom when I saw it! In fact, within matter of seconds from getting up I already knew something was going to appear and the sight of it nearly killed me! within matter of seconds from getting up I already knew something was going to appear and the sight of it nearly killed me! My whole body jolted from inside as I stood outside the bedroom. I then reached out to switch on the light with my right hand. The sight of it was very frightening! I knew from looking at it's height that it was no foul play and having familiarity with the supernatural, the same dire feeling held me again! The phone was in my left hand, I quickly took a picture and somehow I can feel that the thing knew what I was doing. I dropped my phone after taking a shot without flash. I picked it up quickly and with my hands trembling, set the camera to flash and took another shot. The thing grew as it moved and immediately shrank . I didn't dare open the door to check and just stood by my bedroom. I felt angry and afraid at the same time. Drank some water, sat down again and said some prayers. I switched on my kitchen and living room lights as I went back to sleep. I was tossing and turning in bed and couldn't sleep till 7am. (I'm sharing this so that if anything happens to me, people might know the cause. I really value those who prayed and gave me moral support but I also have to confide that I came across some who had an adverse motive for my wellbeing. They are the ones alleging that I'm not helping myself, that I can leave this house tomorrow and change things around miraculously.) Part 1 of the Spooner Road Saga and confession with Raysan Ace can be found here on our YouTube channel. Confession by Cara Wong Cover Photo Credit: Nikko Pascua "If I had to describe Tanglin Halt or "chup lao" as it was more commonly known, I would say it was basically the cusp of all the paranormal shit that happened to me and I wouldn't move there even if someone paid me a million dollars. Will probably split this story into 2 or 3 parts cause the number of encounters there were ridiculous." - Cara Wong So as a bit of a backstory, my dad was a regular in the "house flipping" scene. It basically meant buying properties at good prices, getting it done up and then reselling it at good profits. It also meant we never stayed in one place for very long. If memory serves, Tanglin Halt was either our 3rd or 4th home.
I will refrain from revealing the block number but it was close to the church and the old railway track. We first moved into a higher floor of that block and lived there for a couple of months before the real estate agent told us that a floor below us in the same block was selling for cheap - plus it was a corner unit. Naturally my dad's interest was piqued and within months we had yet moved to another home. On hindsight, no free meal in the world and cheap houses usually come at a nasty cost. In the beginning, everything started off small. Incidents that weren't so big that you could brush it off as your imagination or a coincidence.
Confession by Jeremy This happened to me many many years ago when I was 13 years old. My family and I used to live at Tampines St. 44, block 470. My dad and I did not get along well. He went away for 10 years and when he came back, he was like a stranger to me. He was also very abusive and I hated him for it. It was a dark period of my life then and I was a depressive and angsty teenager. I was sleeping alone in my room one night when I woke up suddenly and felt like I was being watched. Instinctively, I turned to my bedroom window and saw this old Malay woman with dishevelled hair wearing a white baju kurung with a sash cloth around her shoulders and holding a tongkat (walking stick). I immediately turned away and hid under my blanket. Next thing, I felt a long tongue licking my ear. I quietly prayed for the thing to go away and I think I must have blacked out from fear. I quietly prayed for the thing to go away and I think I must have blacked out from fear. Few weeks passed and I was with my grandma and her side of family who are Peranakan. I told them my encounter and they said it could be a witch as I was a virgin boy. In malay, nenek kebayan. There was also another incident in that house that took place between my mom and grandmother. Grandmother walked out of her room and saw my mom combing her hair in front of a vintage mirror that my dad had brought home. My grandmother called out to my mom but she didn't reply. Grandmother walked towards the kitchen to get some water and found my mom by the stove cooking. "Eh, how come you are here?" Grandmother asked, sensing something was amiss. "I've been here all along, cooking. Why?" My mother asked. "I thought I just saw you outside combing your hair," grandmother replied. They both ran out of the kitchen to check the mirror but found no one there. After that incident both grandmother and my mother begged my father to discard the mirror but he would hear none of it. He was drawn and attracted the mirror and insisted on keeping it at home. He was drawn and attracted the mirror and insisted on keeping it at home. There were other unexplainable occurrences that took place over the years. Such as my football moving by itself, the sound of children running around at home, and the sound of bouncing marbles in the middle of the night. There was once when I was alone at home watching television and the channel kept changing on its own to Chinese Opera. I would change to other channel but after a while, the television would automatically change back to the Chinese Opera. My parents finally sold the house and moved out a few years later. Moving out day, I felt sad and I could feel those spirits in my old unit saying farewell. Just a couple years later there was an article in the straits times of a father who killed his wife, kids and he jumped down to his death. I wonder if the entities in the house might have driven him over the edge. "Jeremy seems to have a gift to attract or see supernatural entities. His first encounter was when he was waiting for the school bus in the early morning to fetch him. He was standing at Dunmen Secondary School football field when he suddenly felt scared and looked up to see like a white cloth flying overhead and vanished into a tree." - Eugene Tay
Confessions by Rahim Illustration by Syed Wilson This is one ghost story that has nobody in it. - Eugene Tay This story took place in Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru, Malaysia where I was staying with my parents and 3 sisters. There was a period of time where we were 'disturbed' everyday for almost a month. There were nights where we would experience strange noises in our house. The noises sounded like something scurrying around the house and even on our roof. There was this tik-taking sound like the sound of nails on zinc. At first we would dismiss it as noises made by our cats but as time goes by it got even worse. There was one occasion where I was very sure I heard the noise coming directly from my bedroom but when I went in to check, there was nothing! Apart from the noises there were also a foul stench that came out of no where. We thought that maybe an animal had died under the floorboards or in the attic, but despite searching the whole house, we could not find the source. And strangely enough, the stench was not always persistent; appearing and disappearing at different times of the day. My father decided to seek spiritual help from a bomoh to take a look at our house to find out what was the cause of these disturbances. My father decided to seek spiritual help from a bomoh to take a look at our house to find out what was the cause of these disturbances. I remembered it was a Friday night when the bomoh arrived. The moment he stepped into the house, he told us that there was something which is not of this world that had taken refuge in our house. We were shocked to hear what he had told us. The bomoh began his ritual of cleansing; he went to every corner and every room in our house. My father asked what was actually causing all the disturbances and the bomoh said that soon we will get to see its true form. The bomoh chanted prayers and to our surprise, we heard a scurrying sound coming from the kitchen towards the living room! What we saw was the most hideous thing and I will never ever forget it! It was a hideous looking head connected to a hand! Get this - i'm not making this up. It was literally a head that was on a hand! What we saw was the most heinous thing and I will never ever forget it!
Confession retold by Eugene Tay This story was told to me in 2009 by a close family friend. This incident took place during the late 80s, early 90s era at Kaki Bukit estate, Singapore. Kaki Bukit had a new HDB development that was built upon old kampong grounds and cemetery for those who can recall it. Our house faced a hill which leads up to an old mosque. Currently you try to find that place on the map, it would show just a cluster of new HDB blocks. No more hill, no more mosque, and apparently no more news of a Nenek Kebayan roaming the area. I stayed there for 12 years before moving out to Seng Kang. I had 2 miscarriages in that house and the final incident is the most painful memory I had to bear. So to many people, my husband included, the legend of Nenek kebayan is a myth, but to me I believe that’s who was responsible for those deaths. I had 2 miscarriages in that house and the final incident is the most painful memory My husband was working in offshore marine line and I was a full time housewife. We were wedded for about three years and living with his parents in that time before getting a place of our own at Kaki Bukit. So naturally when the new home came we tried to start a family. It didn’t take long for me to get pregnant with our first child. My husband would work shift so that would mean there was about 2 weeks to a month, sometimes, he will be out at sea. My mother would come by to help out during those times. So what I’m about to tell you is not just the ramblings of a pregnant woman, my late mother, bless her soul, was able to corroborate my experience. I was in my third trimester, I remember. We were ready to welcome the arrival of my first born. That’s when I encountered this Nenek. Back in those days it was common for us to leave our doors open. All the neighbours pretty much knew each other and in the afternoons the Malay neighbours from downstairs would come to door to door to sell gorang pisang (fried banana fritters). We knew all the maciks (middle aged malay ladies) there so when the Nenek* appeared we were quite puzzled. *Nenek literally translates to "grandmother". A polite term to address an elderly malay woman. She wasn’t selling anything, she just wanted to come in to our home to congratulate us on the pregnancy. Although I remember feeling very uneasy at that time, I didn’t want to appear offensive so I let her in. She was quite unkempt and smelled stale like someone who had not had a shower in a while. She placed her hands on my belly and smiled. Talking to my unborn kid in Malay. I didn’t understand all the words but It really made me uncomfortable. My mom was asleep at that time. She usually takes her afternoon nap and would wake up around dinner time. This took place around 6pm, I recalled, because I was secretly hoping for my mom to get up soon so I have an excuse to disengage. She placed her hands on my belly and smiled. Talking to my unborn kid in Malay. Eventually, I made an excuse to go to the kitchen to make her a cup of coffee. She smiled at me, her teeth were in terrible condition. That’s what made her so memorable. She merely nodded at me and kept that grin plastered on her face as I went to the kitchen. From the kitchen I could see the main door. So if she had left my home, I would be able to notice her leaving; and she’s quite old and walked with a shuffle, so even more so it would be easy to spot her leaving. When I went back to the living room with the coffee she was no where to be seen. I checked the rooms, but no sign of her. I shrugged it off as probably something that I might have missed and was glad that she decided not to stay around. That night I woke up with a terrible cramp in my abdomen. The contractions were excruciating but I knew it was too early for delivery. I bled all over the bed; my mom called for an ambulance but by the time I was taken to the hospital for check, the baby was gone. By the time I was taken to the hospital for check, the baby was gone. I did not see the Nenek anymore and didn’t tell anyone about it either. My husband and I decided to try again the following year and again in the third trimester, the Nenek appeared at my door again. All the old memories came flooding back. This time I did not let her enter and I quickly closed the door on her. She was outside hurling insults and curses, demanding to be let in. I went to the room to wake my mother up. My mom went to the peephole to look at the Nenek and immediately told me to stay in the room and start praying. I’m not a very devout Catholic. I was introduced to the religion by my parents but besides going for the occasional Sunday mass, I was mostly Catholic by name. But that day I poured my heart into my prayers. My whole body was shaking in fear. I could sense whatever outside was evil. In my heart, I had always suspected the Nenek was behind my first miscarriage but now I’m sure. From the room I could hear her growling outside and cursing. Then there was a foul stench so strong it was like the the sewerage had burst or something. Very foul smell and it seem to come and go. Outside my door I could hear my own mother calling upon the Lord’s name. This went on for sometime and finally all was quiet. I continued staying in my room. My mother came in and comforted me. She didn’t want to elaborate much on it but many years later my mother revealed that through the peephole she was able to see the Nenek’s true form and it was hideous. She knew about such creatures from her growing up years in kampongs but that was the first time she has seen one up close. Through the peephole she was able to see the Nenek’s true form and it was hideous. I did not feel good the entire week; worried that I might bump into her if I went out so I just stayed home. The following week when my husband came back, we left home only for my regular Gyne check up. That’s when we found out that my baby’s heart had stopped beating. My husband does not believe in all these stories and attributed the miscarriages to me being stressed or purely biological. But to me, I’m going to my grave with the belief that it was that Nenek that took my both my children. When I had my third child, we stayed at my in-laws place and there was not trouble at all. We moved back after the baby was born despite me being hesitant to do so but living with the in-laws weren’t very convenient. In the first five years that we returned home, I would sometimes smell that same foul smell at night and hear nails scratching on my windows, but no outright knocking or appearance. We moved out of that house as soon as we could and thankfully till today I’m glad to say I had no other further encounters like that. The legend of Nenek Kebayan has been passed down from ancient times to the present in the Malay community, with the most recent sightings reported in Perak in 2019. She is described as a hunchbacked old woman walking with a stick. She is believed to be a human woman who had acquired her powers through occult practices or making bargains with spiritual entities such as Jinns or Orang Bunians.
A video of what looks like a hunchbacked creature walking with a stick fits the description of a Nenek Kebayan.
